Ivalice Comes to Final Fantasy XIV Next Month

Ivalice, the expansive world explored in Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy Tactics, will be making its way to Final Fantasy XIV on 10th October as part of patch 4.1, dubbed “The Legend Returns”.  This is Stormblood‘s first major patch, and it’ll continue the story that the expansion started.

Watch the trailer below, which teases what fresh content we’ll soon be able to tackle.

A new trial, The Minstrel’s Ballad: Shinryu’s Domain, and the hardcore The Unending Coil of Bahamut (Ultimate) are included in this patch, along with new raids, a Far Eastern-themed housing area, a PvP mode with 24 players, and various system and battle adjustments are just the latest additions to the ever-growing MMO.

I really need to catch up on my own Final Fantasy XIV adventure…

Square Enix has announced that All Saints’ Wake, the yearly Final Fantasy XIV Halloween celebration, launches on 19th October. This means there will be a bunch of new items and outfits to collect, as well as limited quests available throughout its duration.

You can read up on the event in full here, and it’ll last until 1st November. Available this year are werewolf outfits for both male and female classes, and a bunch of spooky pumpkin and ghost themed items to deck out your house in — you know, if you’ve got one. I don’t. Maybe one day when I don’t spend all of my gil on equipment.

With the latest patch out and All Saints’ Wake upon us, now is a great time to subscribe to Final Fantasy XIV. It’s an outstanding game, but be warned that you might find your backlog steadily growing once you’ve begun exploring Eorzea!

Let’s start with Materia, the Goddess of Machinery, who brings the heroes together to fight against Spiritus, the God of Magic.

The next Final Fantasy XIV seasonal event, The Maiden’s Rhapsody, will be underway in a few days. Having originally been available in 2015, the event sees the world’s of Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XI collide. XI may not exist anymore, but its legacy is far from forgotten.

From Friday, 10th November, you’ll be able to access the quest ‘A Journey to Remember’ by speaking with Remumu on the upper decks of Limsa Lominsa. It will be available until 29th November, and you get a set of complete Amatsu gear upon completion to deck your character out in.

Interview with Naoki Yoshida – Final Fantasy XIV’s Yoshi-P!

$

0

This past weekend I had the opportunity to sit down with Naoki Yoshida, the producer and director of Final Fantasy XIV, to talk about the game and its future. It’s very popular right now and Yoshida-san and the rest of the team hope to carry this momentum for many more future years to come.

If you’re here because you want to know if Blitzball will be included in the Gold Saucer at some point, I didn’t ask. Sorry all, I want to know too, but Yoshida-san has been asked this question more than people have pondered about the meaning of life. Without further ado, check out our interview!

RD: Since replacing the 14 day trial with allowing new players to tackle all content that the game has to offer until they hit level 35, have you found this to be an effective way at enticing new players?

NY: The 14 day former restriction is a relatively long period, but nowadays people live very busy lifestyles. The chunk of time a player can get is focused on the weekends, meaning that if the limitation is only 14 days then they can only play for two weekends, maybe less. Rather than just limit it to the 14 days, maybe we should remove all the restrictions so that they can play any game any time.

It’s not like we wanted to extend the time, but it’s more like to give opportunity for them to play more at convenient times. That’s why we also see data-wise that more people come again, and so of course this means a really good, positive impact with these changes.

RD: Shirogane’s new homes were quickly bought, leaving many disappointed that they missed out. Are there plans to vastly expand these areas, add more housing areas in abundance, and to make it so everyone has a fairer chance?

NY: Before we go into detail, can we separate those two points? The facts that the housing plot for Shirogane sold very quickly, and also the fact that there are some FCs, or many FCs, who don’t own any house? For the demands that everyone who has joined a FC and wants a house to work on airships and all that is not just an issue with Shirogane.

So the expansion and addition of plots will be applied for each housing area, and that’s why we are going through those discussions to try and supply more to meet demand. That’s why we’d like to add the same amount of plots with 4.2 to each housing area, however Shirogane is such a popular area and so it’s housing sold out quickly, so we’d like make sure that it’s fairer for people to buy housing in future.

On top of that, we’re making a system where we can provide plots in a more fair manner to everyone, but we’re unable to talk more about it now. Because, if we reveal the feature now, then players won’t be able to prepare to meet the requirements, so there will be a discrepancy with those who’ve already prepared and those who haven’t, so we’d like to keep that information close until nearer the release of 4.2. This system will ensure that those who currently want those houses will benefit more, so you won’t have to worry about this much as it’ll be a fair system. *all laugh*

RD: I’ve been playing Final Fantasy since I was very young, and a lot of that has to do with how attractive the worlds are. Final Fantasy XII’s Ivalice recently appeared in Final Fantasy XIV, so what worlds would you personally like to see included in future?

NY: We won’t say that we have no ideas, but because Ivalice was just included with the latest patch, and with the next patch the next sequence of Omega will be introduced to the game, so not to lose any surprise elements, we don’t want to go into detail at this stage. Surely the next thing will surprise many people.

RD: I look forward to it! Are there any existing creatures that might be added as mounts? For example, the Decaying Gourmand from the Lost City of Amdapor?

There was a lot of laughter and a quick break to find out what Decaying Gourmand is in Japanese, and I apologised for having not known before-hand! In the end we got there by describing it as a decaying Goobbue.

NK: To create this monster as a mount, it’s not that difficult, but how can he fly? Can he fly? *laughs* We’ll relay this to the team! Maybe we’ll create it as an outfit for All Saints’ Wake so you can disguise yourself as a monster, as they may be better, but we’ll relay that to who’s in charge of this decision.

RD: Will level caps ever only be increased with expansion packs, and do you have an idea of what the max level may be?

NK: When people play role-playing games, they like to enhance their characters. If we don’t add a raised level cap to each expansion, then maybe players will be discouraged. The level cap will increase with each expansion but we want to add more elements so that you can further enhance your characters.

RD: You recently had a Yo-kai Watch event. What were the difficulties you faced in making this collaboration happen, and why was a different Square Enix IP such as Dragon Quest not picked instead?

NK: Yes, of course it’s really different and there’s a lot of challenges and although I and Level-5 are very friendly with each other, there has to be a formal contract made between both companies, so we have to go through legal side of things and licensing. We have a Final Fantasy XI collaboration, but of course implementing something with another company is very difficult.

As for the content, because we have respect for each other, we try to refine the good parts from each IP and make content involving both. This is a basic policy as we respect each other, however the difficult part is the licensing and legal parts beforehand. Even though I have quite a lot of ideas and would like to work with others, but it’s easier said than done so my manager reels me in because it’s not so easy! *laughs*

RD: For a fun one, have you got a personal favourite dungeon and primal battle?

NK: Kugane Castle! Kugane Castle with Black Mage is exhilarating. For primal, Knights of the Round on Extreme.

And with that, our time was up! It was fantastic to meet Yoshida-san, and spending time with him has been invaluable. Thanks to Square Enix for allowing us to visit their London offices to conduct the interview! I don’t know about you, but I’m itching to go play Final Fantasy XIV right now, and I’m excited to see what Yoshida-san and the team has in store for us in future updates and expansions.

Bandai Namco has put theories to rest with who Tekken 7‘s next character will be with their latest reveal trailer, and who would’ve guessed that Final Fantasy XV‘s Noctis Lucis Caelum would be joining the fray? Noctis will be joining the roster next Spring, and he’s looking fantastic.

tekken 7 noctis

Check out the reveal trailer below! It’s pretty lengthy at a little over 4 minutes long, but it shows off a good chunk of gameplay, new stages with familiar faces in the background, and some good laughs.

We could’ve had any one of the boys (and they all tried to be the one to attend) but who else could it be bar the group’s leader? It’s great to see him fishing with Tekken‘s Lars, too! Are you excited for this cross-over, or would you have rather seen someone else? I’m stoked to have Noctis in the game, but I’m hoping that Yakuza‘s Kazuma Kiryu will still join the world of Tekken one day…

Square Enix has just released the Dissidia opening movie, almost two months ahead of its release. Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is the third game in the Dissidia series which pits various Final Fantasy characters against each other, and it’s the most ambitious entry yet.

The beautiful CG opening movie clocks in at a little over two minutes, and I know I’ll be watching it again when I boot the game up!

Seeing so many characters in action is exciting, and I can’t wait to set up my dream team to tackle opponents both online and offline. I’m thinking Zidane, Y’shtola and Lightning, but I’m looking forward to giving everyone a whirl!

And it all starts this month. These are the currently confirmed UK release dates of the latest Japanese games for January 2018.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT PS4 30th Square Enix

Alongside Street Fighter V Arcade Edition, the new Season 3 Pass for the game is also releasing, including some big new characters you can read about here.

Fighting game fans should be pleased with the 3 large releases this month, with an additional fourth option in Gintama Rumble for those who want to import the anime fighter. Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is finally coming to PS4. But the highlight for us has to be the stunning Arc System Works fighter, Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Lost Sphear will please JRPG fans this month. Developed by Square Enix’s Tokyo RPG Factory, this release follows on from their super good I Am Setsuna. At a glance it looks quite similar, but in a more machine-focused world. We’d love more I Am Setsuna, and continuing to develop it mechanically in a new direction is super exciting.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth — Hacker’s Memory is another JRPG that expands on yet another JRPG we loved (the first Cyber Sleuth). Between these two, you’re definitely covered if you’ve already mopped up your JRPG standouts in the holiday season.

Lost Sphear

If that’s not enough the excellent Monster Hunter is finally releasing, bringing the phenomenal, pristine, and perfect monster hunting series back to big home consoles for the first time in a while. With the move, it’s also bringing some huge changes, making this the most fluid and feature complete Monster Hunter experience you’ll ever see. If you’ve held off before, this is the one to try (and hopefully you did in the beta).

I’ve also got a bee in my bonnet about Death Mark. Over in Japan it’s finally jumping from PS Vita to both PS4 and Switch. It’s a horror adventure game that looks great, but will be tricky to enjoy without being able to read Japanese. Gintama Rumble on the other hand may very well please Gintama fans on an import buy.

One of the only screenshots of Death Mark I could find without revolting body horror.

Are you buying anything this month?

Reactions:

I’ve been ready for Monster Hunter World for a long time.

Oops, I never finished I Am Setsuna, but it was really good! I will play the new one more.

Final Fantasy XV Episode Ignis Review (PS4)

$
0
0

Last but certainly not least, Ignis is here with his very own piece of story DLC to wrap up the Final Fantasy XV Season Pass, and all of the promised individual character-focused story nuggets. With some smart design choices and plenty to add to the main game’s story, Episode Ignis might be the best of a slightly under-cooked bunch.

Episode Ignis might be the best of a slightly under-cooked bunch.

The best bits of Final Fantasy XV lie in the interactions between all four of the “boy band” main party. At one point in the story, Noctis has to go solo, and the absence of your friends has a big impact on how the game feels — which is both quite genius, and also really boring. Mirroring this, each piece of Story DLC follows one of the other three party members.

The concept is almost inherently flawed, as inevitably they ditch what made the first half of Final Fantasy XV so strong. But if any of the pieces of DLC manages to follow it through right, it’s Episode Ignis.

There is a very brief, inconsequential boat section that at least makes the trailers look more exciting.

Taking place in the Venitian-esque city of Altissia during its attack from Niflheim, the setting is varied, great to look at, and interestingly structured, with a grappling hook making navigating the confusing city a breeze via rooftops; the combat mechanics feel refreshing and effortlessly strategic (as you’d expect from the bespectacled “clever one” of the group); and the story expands on the main game — giving plenty of much needed detail on the Altissia portion, and deeper (and thankfully much clearer) insights into Ignis, Ravus, and Ardyn.

The story expands on the main game — giving plenty of much needed detail on the Altissia portion.

It kicks off following the non-Noctis party members during Niflheim’s attack, with Ignis being separated from Prompto and Gladiolus when a bridge crumbles, throwing him into one of the canals. From the offset it makes it clear that while you may be in Altissia, it’s going to handle a lot differently to your experience with the area as Noctis in the main game, allowing you to swim through its waterways rather than confusingly navigating the maze-like pathways. This is added to even more when you shortly get your hands on a grappling hook, allowing you to navigate the Altissian districts fairly easily.

A tactical map view of the area allows you to see which districts are under Niflheim control, and clearing them out as you make your way to rescue Noctis will return control to Altissia. It’s an interesting dynamic, but for such a short experience who has control of what doesn’t really seem to have much in the way of actual impact on the game.

With his dual spellknives, Ignis’ attack combos in a fight are pretty quick. His elemental powers come into play with the special effects he imbues on his weapons of choice. Your weapon wheel gives you three flavours to pick from, each offering their own strategic benefits. Fire does large damage on single foes, ice shoots out a basic area-of-effect with each hit, and lighting allows you to zap instantly to targets some distance away (similar to Noctis’ warp abilities), perfect for quickly taking out long-range snipers.

Combat isn’t too challenging, and you even have a run in with another character who helps you out to make things a tad easier. But it’s a super simple system that feels dynamic, and has just a touch of strategy to it. In execution, it works tremendously well. The boss fights are a bit of a jump up, with an optional last boss being quite challenging indeed, and a bonus fight against Noctis from the menu really testing your skills.

Does the dirt make you think of a new recipe?

Unlike the fairly lacklustre previous DLC outings, Episode Ignis actually feels like it adds a fair bit to the main game’s story. Which is partially because the Altissia section of the game is pretty wanting and clearly rushed — but that’s not Episode Ignis‘ fault. It nicely fills out more about what was happening during Niflheim’s attack, and it’s great to get more clarity on Ravus and Ardyn’s motivations, as well as learn a bit more about Ignis himself.

Towards the end of the DLC you get a choice between one of one dialogue options, and once you’ve finished the it once, this is expanded to one of two. Choosing the new second option changes not only the end of the DLC, but also creates a whole alternate “what if”-style ending to the entire game’s story. It’s an absolute must-see for Ignis fans.

Episode Ignis is far from a perfect dish, but with plenty of seasoning in the pot, it’s possibly the tastiest of the bunch, and adds some much needed flavour to the main game.

Episode Ignis adds plenty to the broth that works really well. The main issue is that the experience is always going to be quite short, so some aspects like the district control don’t really have much time to breathe. Ignis’ combat is a great addition, and, thanks to the main game being patched, you can now play as him there if you like. Which, in a sense, makes Episode Ignis a bit less unique in a strange sort of way.

What’s here is good, but there’s just not a whole lot of it. Like the other DLC, Episode Ignis is far from a perfect dish, but with plenty of seasoning in the pot, it’s possibly the tastiest of the bunch, and adds some much needed flavour to the main game.

Final Fantasy x Monster Strike Second Crossover Event Announced

Take a deep breath. This is a Final Fantasy x Monster Strike event, and is nothing to do with Monster Hunter. Stop playing so much Monster Hunter. Go to bed. Rest. And awake anew for some Monster Strike crossover fun once you’ve calmed down a bit. Because Monster Strike is fun too.

For those unfamiliar, Monster Strike is a smartphone gacha game for iOS and Android that’s a lot of fun. It’s a puzzle game where you shoot your monsters at other monsters to deal damage, and they bounce around. Kind of like marbles, I guess.

Monster Strike have previously held a crossover event with Final Fantasy characters, but now they’re holding a second Final Fantasy x Monster Strike event beginning on 2nd February 2018. It’ll include new characters available to collect and use as monsters, new forms for previous characters, and new quests.

The new wave of Final Fantasy characters you’ll be able to grab are:

– 5* Cecil (Dark)
– 5* Tidus & Yuna (Water)
– 5* Noctis (Dark)
– 4* Terra (Fire)
– 4* Zidane (Earth)

The characters look great in the Monster Strike art style! Take a look at their evolved forms and for Tidus & Yuna, their evolved and ascended forms!

And it looks like you’ll also be able to grab the first wave of crossover characters. Characters from this first wave are also getting some new forms you can evolve into too!

On top of this, several Final Fantasy themed quests will also be available to play through in the game!

This new Final Fantasy x Monster Strike crossover will begin in Monster Strike on 2nd February 2018.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT Review (PS4)

The Dissidia games on PSP were a large part of my time with the beloved handheld, and I couldn’t get enough of them. I waited a long time to hear word of the series making its way to the current generation of consoles and, although it’s a bit different, it’s still very much Dissidia.

Set after the events of the previous Dissidia games, the warriors of Cosmos and Chaos are summoned again to fight in another war for light or dark. Materia, the Goddess of Protection, and Spiritus, the God of Destruction, are the ones who’ve summoned everybody, and they take on the roles of Cosmos and Chaos for this game. Each character remembers the events of the past games too which makes for some great conversations. Poor Noctis and Ace though, as they’re two of the only characters who are brand new to this game and so are not familiar with the rest of the cast.

Instead of being able to storm through the story as you might like, you need to fight to earn memoria which is used to unlock story segments. It sounds like a chore – and it looks like one too, at first – but it didn’t take very long until I had the entire grid unlocked. I played arcade mode and online a lot, so I ended up earning memoria at a healthy rate whilst naturally switching between the various modes offered.

If you’d like to blast through the story in one session then, sadly, you won’t be able to, but I recommend playing around with other modes too. Whilst this didn’t bother me, it does seem weird to lock it behind the memoria wall, especially as it’s so easy to obtain. I love seeing so many of my favourite characters interacting with each other, which has always been the big pull of Dissidia, and finding out the truth of why they’re being forced to fight once more. The narrative is more mysterious in this one, and I wasn’t quite sure how it would all pan out.

In action, its wonderfully simplistic mechanics thrive on reaction speed and knowing your characters.

Unlike the other Dissidia games which focused on 1v1 battles, Dissidia NT features 3v3 battles where you control one character in an attempt to beat the opposing team. You build bravery by attacking your opponents, and then you use the collected bravery to deal damage to your opponent’s health bar. It sounds a little weird, but in action, its wonderfully simplistic mechanics thrive on reaction speed and knowing your characters. Different moves are performed on ground and in the air, and moving the analog stick will change your attacks too.

Bravery attacks might not do any damage, but they’re necessary if you want to deal any meaningful damage during the match with your HP attacks. This system allows players to turn the tide of battle with one giant HP attack, but you’ll make a bigger target for yourself where you might find yourself ganged up on. Luckily, your teammates should be there to lend a helping hand, and you two skills in battle (with many to choose from when customising characters) that can keep danger at bay via buffs, debuffs, magical abilities and team-orientated abilities such as sharing bravery.

dissidia final fantasy nt review

Dissidia may not have the depth that plenty of other fighters have, but that’s one of its appeals. It’s a chill fighter to play, and there’s certainly a difference between someone who knows what they’re doing and someone who doesn’t, and the roster consists of unique characters. Sure, you’ll likely pick your favourites, but the game’s various arcade routes and story challenges will force you to try a few characters who you might not have tried otherwise.

In story mode, you’ll find yourself fighting more than just other teams, because you need to prove your strength to various summons/eidolons to get them to join you on your adventure — you’ll unlock them randomly for use in other modes, though. These battles are hard, and you only have three lives per attempt. Most of their attacks are fatal, and learning its tells are vital to knowing when to avoid and when it’s safe to attack.

The game’s various arcade routes and story challenges will force you to try a few characters who you might not have tried otherwise.

You have to stagger them with bravery before being able to use your HP attacks, meaning you can’t tackle them in quite the same way that you might in a normal battle. I enjoy these battles, even though they can be frustrating, and they make for a nice change in pace. You can fight them one after the other in summon gauntlet too, once you’ve unlocked it — good luck!

There’s plenty to unlock including skins, weapons, avatars, titles and music tracks, and you also earn gil to buy these same items. I’ve unlocked a handful of skins already, mostly due to the games’ treasure system — which works similar to loot boxes — but there’re no microtransactions in sight. Treasure boxes are constantly earned, and it’s a great way of unlocking items which feels consistently rewarding.

dissidia final fantasy nt review

Having participated in both of the betas, Dissidia NT has gotten better each time I’ve played it. It’s smooth, responsive and it feels like a Dissidia game — this might seem like an odd comment to you, but 3v3 is a far cry from 1v1! Character models and environments are gorgeous, with different skins and weapons for each character, and cutscenes are a joy to watch. The soundtrack, as expected, is outstanding with returning and arrangements of Final Fantasy songs from all the games included, as well as some entirely original songs.

dissidia final fantasy nt review

Fans should pick this one up, and those looking for something a little different in the fighting scene might be pleasantly surprised by Dissidia Final Fantasy NT’s mechanics.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is a celebration of Final Fantasy, and it brings together many of the heroes and villains that we know and love. A mostly stable netcode, various arcade routes, and an entertaining story leave you with lots to play with. Its unique gameplay and emphasis on teamwork makes for great fun, although matchmaking sometimes leaves you with AI on your team against a full party, which is nothing short of extremely unfair — I’d rather it take longer, or not put me in a ranked game at all in that case.

I’d love to see more modes introduced for both online and offline, but Square Enix promise a steady stream of DLC characters to keep the game’s roster growing. Fans should pick this one up, and those looking for something a little different in the fighting scene might be pleasantly surprised by Dissidia Final Fantasy NT‘s mechanics.
